The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by Major General John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, and is the only veterans organization that has been chartered by Congress, receiving its charter on August 4, 1937.

Karl Greengos was born on July 28, 1948, and grew up in Morris Plains, NJ. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1966.
He died on December 12, 2023, at the age of 75. Karl served two tours in Vietnam in the US Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal.
Peter Paul Siciliano, Sr., lifelong Madison resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the age of 94. He was a beloved father, grandfather and Marine veteran of WWII. Peter was a member of the 4th Marine Division Association, and the Slattery Detachment of the US Marine Corps League in Whippany, NJ.

The Traveling Memorial Wall is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, it stands 6 feet tall in the center and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. The Memorial is a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War.
Roger A. Cregg Sr. passed away Nov. 6, 2012, in Denville, NJ at the age of 85. He was born in Parris Island, SC. Mr. Cregg served in the USMC during World War II before his honorable discharge as a Corporal. He also served in the Air Force ROTC as a Second Lieutenant while attending Georgetown University. Roger was a “True Marine” and a member of the Marine Corps League.
Seymour “Sy” Brody, 88, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Morristown, N.J., passed away on June 16, 2009, in Morristown, N.J at the age of 88. Sy was a WWII Marine who fought at Guadalcanal and the invasions of Bougainville and Guam. He was an educator for the Morris School District and at Seton Hall University. Sy was also a member of the Third Marine Division Association and the Marine Corps. League.
Richard Braden, died on September 23, 2011, at the age of 81. Born in Hoboken, NJ, he lived in Montville Twp and Manahawkin before moving to Lake Hiawatha in 2009. Mr. Braden served in the USMC during the Korean War and was a member of L/Cpl. Robert J Slattery Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
Richard J Bernard Sr, 76 years old, of Highlands, passed away at home on August 20, 2006. He was born and raised in Newark and lived in East Hanover before moving to Highlands. He worked for the NJ State Department of Labor and served in the Marine Corps in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.
Russell J. Allaman, 67, died on Jan. 6, 2013, at St. Clares Hospital in Denville, NJ. He retired as a Lieutenant with the Denville Police Dept. in 1995 and also owned and operated McCabe Travel Agency in Denville for 15 years. Russell served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Stanley J. Godlewski, Jr., of Florham Park, died on June 13, 2018, at the age of 71. He honorably served 2 tours in Vietnam from 1966 to 1969 as a USMC machine gunner, receiving the Presidential Unit Citation for acts of heroism during combat.
Jack Gartenberg, 93, of Parsippany died October 26, 2019. Jack served as a member of the 4th Division of the U.S.M.C. during World War II, where he was wounded in the Battle of Iwo Jima and earned a Purple Heart. He was a life member of the Slattery Detachment
Jim Reilly, Insurance adjuster, Roseland resident, 64 years old, died in the Hospice of New Jersey, Wayne, on Aug. 19, 2008. He served in the USMC from 1962-1968 and was a member of the Slattery Detachment.
Joseph Edward Armstrong died in Succasunna NJ on 3 July 2018. He served in the Marine Corps with the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines, 1st Marine Brigade in Kaneohe, HI.
Edward Samuel Akkaway of Parsippany died at the age of 73 on October 25, 2017. Eddie served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart. He was also an Electrician for IBEW Local #102, Parsippany.
Robert J. Cuozzo died at his home in Mt. Arlington, NJ on April 8, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born in Orange, NJ, raised his family in Boonton and moved to Mt Arlington in before retiring in 2010. Bob earned his PhD from NYU and worked as an organic chemist. He served in the US Marine Corp from 1954 until 1957 at Camp Pendleton and at Yokosuka, Japan. He was a Captain at the time of his discharge.
Mr. James Richard Hamilton, 80, of Thurmont, MD, died on March 2, 2023 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was born in Pennsylvania. JR was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
Daniel Warren Weidner, died at the age 99 on March 4, 2026. He was born on February 23, 1927, in Summit, NJ, At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where served for 4 years overseas.
Albert P. Vnencak, 99, of Whippany, NJ, died on June 18, 2019. Albert lived in Whippany for 76 years. Albert served proudly in the Marines during WWII.
Michael John Zecca, Sr., 89, passed away on June 5, 2020. He resided many years in Belleville before moving to East Hanover in 1963. He was a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
Carmen M. Yannuzzi, Sr., 95, of East Hanover died on April 14, 2024, at the age of 95. He joined the US Navy during World War II and following the war, he continued his service, joining the US Marine Corps during the Korean War at the age of 25.
Richard F. Walter of New Vernon passed away peacefully after a long illness on December 25, 2019, at the age of 84 years. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956.
Paul E. Whitehead, 77, of Randolph, passed away on October 27, 2024, at Morristown Medical Center. He was born and raised in Morristown and resided in Randolph for 45 years. Paul was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corp from 1967-1970.
Gary J. Windt, a lifelong resident of Morris Plains, New Jersey, passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer. Gary proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a lifetime defined by service, dedication, and quiet strength.
James A. Salerno died Friday November 25, 2016 at his home in Cedar Knolls at the age of 98. He served in WWII as a Sgt for the Carlson Raider, 5th Marine division and fought at Bouganville, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. He received 4 Bronze Stars, 2 Presidential Citations, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart.
Joseph Ollerenshaw passed away on 8/18/2015 at the age of 83 in Morristown, NJ. He served in the USMC from 1952 – 1960 and remained active with the Marines after discharge. He filled his life with the love of his Marine Corps brotherhood,
James V Gibbions was born in 1940 and died at the age of 81 in Newark, NJ. He left behind his wife, Deborah, children and grandchildren.
Micael J Dowd, Sr served in the USMC from 1955 to 1959. He died on May 21, 2024, in Massachusetts.
Colonel Peter J. O’Hagan Jr., USMC (Ret.), died on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Morristown Medical Center at the age of 81. He lived in Morris Township, N.J., since 1958. He served in the USMC over a 30-yr period from 1954 to 1984.
Jamie Mabin of Mine Hill, NJ passed away at the age of 45 on Jan 3, 2009. He was born and raised in Morristown, NJ and a veteran of the USMC.
Alfred James Lospinoso, 84, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on August 18, 2017. Alfred was a resident of Florham Park and formerly East Hanover.

Angela Fiorentino, formerly of Whippany, was 73 when she passed away. She was born in Corato, Italy. Angela was an amazing, beautiful, strong, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She married the love of her life, Anthony Fiorentino and they were blessed with three children.
Rose Brotzky (July 11, 1922 – April 21, 2021) was born in Glen Ridge, NJ and passed away in Lakewood, NJ. Rose was a United States Marine and served as a radio operator, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Slattery Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
Horace “Al” G. Bischoff passed away on May 11, 2019 in Denville at the age of 93 years. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, then lived in Audubon, NJ and Parsippany before moving to Rockaway in 2001. He served his country proudly in the USMC.
William (Bill) Beltran, 83, of Boonton, N.J., passed away at home on May 1, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. Bill proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957.
Stephen Williams Beecher Sr., formerly of Florham Park, and a resident of Brigantine; passed away peacefully on February 25, 2013, at home surrounded by his loved ones following a courageous battle with lung cancer. After graduation from Boonton High School, he joined the USMC where he endured boot camp at Paris Island, South Carolina and was in the Corps until 1961
Raymond R. Barrick passed away in Denville, NJ on October 14, 2011. He was 73 years old. Raymond served in the US Marine Corps in the mid 1950’s
Lenora Abene (nee De Nicola), 90, passed away November 1, 2015. Lenora was the wife of Arthur Abene. She was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp and served from 1951 to 1952.
ARTHUR JOSEPH ABENE, age 83 from Randolph, NJ passed away in 2009. He served in the USMC during the Korean War and was a member of the Marine Corp League, Slattery detachment prior to his death.

Charles Donald Patterson, age 89, of Hughesville, Maryland, passed away on September 13, 2025. Don proudly served as a US Marine and an active member of the Slattery Detachment.

2025 Slattery Detachment Scholarships Granted
Peter R. Gallo died at home on February 1, 2024. He was 91 years old. He served in the USMC from 1950 to 1953 in Korea. He was a life member and Commandant of the Marine Corps League #206 Slattery Detachment in Whippany, NJ.
Theodore “Ted” Jemas, 79, of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, died at home on August 3, 2025. He worked for United Airlines for over 40 years as a ramp service agent at Newark Airport. His hand was the last to touch the exterior of Flight 93 before it departed from his gate on September 11, 2001. Ted was a proud Marine and served in the Vietnam War
Frank William Gargano 91, of Lavallette, NJ passed away on July 5, 2025. He lived in North Caldwell, NJ for 55 years before moving there to Lavallette 3 years ago. Frank was proud to be an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
