Seymour “Sy” Brody, 88, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Morristown, N.J., passed away on June 16, 2009, in Morristown, N.J. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Brody was the editor of “The Jewish Veteran” from 1996 to 2004, the official publication of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA, and author of “Jewish Heroes of America,” 1991, and its sequel, “Jewish Heroes and Heroines of America,” 1996. Based on his books, Mr. Brody created 12 Internet virtual exhibits on Jewish heroes and heroines of America for the Florida Atlantic University, Wimberly Library Special Collections & Archives of Boca Raton, Fla.
A columnist whose articles appeared in the Jewish and non-Jewish newspapers throughout the country, Mr. Brody was inducted into the Greater Morristown Area Hall of Fame, located in the Morristown, N.J., post office, in April 1992.
Mr. Brody was a World War II Marine who fought in the defense of Guadalcanal and the invasions of Bougainville and Guam.
He was an educator for the Morris School District in Morristown, N.J., until retiring in 1986. For six years, he was a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Education at Seton Hall University. Mr. Brody was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) of the USA and the board of directors of the JWV “National Museum of American Jewish Military History” in Washington, D.C., and past commander of the Department of New Jersey, JWV; the JWV Morristown Post 213, and American Legion Post 1396, where he was a member for over 50 years. In addition, he was also a member of the “40 & 8”; life-member of the VFW; Jewish War Veterans, National Education Association and the New Jersey Education Association, as well as a past member of the executive board of the Urban League of Morris County.
Sy was also a member of the Third Marine Division Association and the Marine Corps. League.
Mr. Brody was the recipient of many awards from veterans, civic and private organizations. Mr. Brody was the chairman of the Memorial and Veterans Day Association of Morristown and Morris Township, N.J., from 1984 to 1993. He was also a lecturer for the Speakers Bureau of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Florida.
Mr. Brody was predeceased by his wife, Ruth. He was survived by his daughter Ellen Brody Moranski of Budd Lake, N.J.; his son, Eric Brody of Olyphant, Pa.; his stepdaughters, Susan Schwartz of Roseland, N.J., and Joan Binder of Charlestown, N.H., and his stepson Gerald Binder of Green Brook, N.J. He is also survived by his sister Doris Millman of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; his brother, Lawrence Brody of Henderson, Nev., and his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
