Theodore “Ted” Jemas, 79, of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to the late George and Rose (née De Angelis) Jemas, Ted was a longtime resident of Cedar Grove. He dedicated over 40 years to a career as a ramp service agent for United Airlines at Newark Airport. Notably, Ted’s life became forever entwined with American history in this role, as it was his hand that last touched the exterior of Flight 93 before it departed from his gate on September 11, 2001, carrying valued colleagues among its crew.

Ted was an active member of the American Legion Post #155 in Whippany, finding great fulfillment in the community and its charitable efforts. He was also a devoted New York Yankees fan and a fashion enthusiast, always dressed to impress in his signature dapper style.
Ted was the eldest grandchild in the Jemas family, and he adored his uncles, aunts, and his many cousins. He loved hosting family celebrations and entertaining in his beautiful backyard that he meticulously maintained.
An avid traveler in his younger years, Ted visited numerous foreign countries with his wife, developing a refined taste for Greek and Italian cuisine and fine wines from around the world along the way. Through his many journeys and years at the airport, Ted amassed a remarkable catalogue of celebrity encounters that he could draw from to add to any conversation. From notorious gangsters to glamour queens, actors, music stars, and even royalty, Ted was always sure to have a captivating story to charm a new acquaintance.
Ted is predeceased by his parents and is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Joanne (née Salzano) Jemas; his devoted children, Joseph A. Jemas and Thea V. Jemas and her partner, Peter Albrecht; and his cherished grand-dog, Tiki.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove.
Funeral Services were under the direction of Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, Cedar Grove. Condolences may be shared online.
