56th anniversary Robert J. Slattery, KIA.
On Thursday 6th July 2023 the Detachment had a wreath placing ceremony outside the American Legion Hall before the start of the meeting. It was an honor to remember L/Cpl Robert J Slattery, our Detachment’s namesake who was KIA in Viet Nam 56 years ago.
Robert was killed in action at a place called Gio Linh in Northern I Corps while a member of H&S Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines. His MOS was 2511, Wireman. He was nine days short of his 21st birthday and just had one month to go before his 13-month tour would end.
Gio Linh was part of what the Marines called Leatherneck Square near the DMZ. It included Cam Lo, Con Thien and Dong Ha.
Detachment Commandant, Paul Brown and Past Detachment Commandant, Eddie Neas, who was in Boot Camp 57 years ago at Parris Island, SC as a member of Bravo Company, Platoon 121, 1st Battalion, placed the wreath at the memorial in front of the American Legion Hall. Approximately 20 Detachment members were present.
